Looking for a Perth copy writer?
I’m definitely one of them.
Hi, I’m Ben
Perth copywriter. Brand storyteller. Instant coffee snob.
I work with businesses, studios and agencies to write their brands’ best selves into existence.
I use words to tell you apart
Authenticity is everything for today’s world of living, breathing brands. I love learning all the unique traits of your brand identity so I can help you write copy that’s brimming with personality. Brand naming, taglines, SEO website copywriting, radio advertising - if you need the right words, together we’ll find them.
Yes, I have a multiple personality problem
When I write for you, I become you. I think like you. Act like you. Shower with you. One minute I’m a glamorous apartment development in East Perth. The next, an artisan butcher engaged in ‘meat wars’ up in the Kimberley. I’m simultaneously cultured, charming, cheeky and loose-lipped. Your brand’s alter ego - the you you were meant to be. Let me write vicariously through you.
My approach
As a Perth copywriter, I love weeding out the inauthentic elements of your brand, and digging deeper into the values, vocabularies and traits that are closer to your brand’s true voice. This means that whatever copywriting job you have, you’ll present yourself to the world in a way that’s innately relatable and undeniably you.
What to expect
I like to think I’m a pretty down to earth, reliable and approachable creative partner. But in the interests of full disclosure, there are some other things you should probably know.
I live in the hills
I’m a serial phone dropper
I love Moccona instant coffee
I’m a diehard Freo supporter
I always have 1,433 browser tabs open at once
I go camping a lot (perks of a freelancer)
I take my dog Arj with me everywhere
Every time I order takeaway, they write my name as ‘Dan’
When I was 9, I ran into a goalpost and smashed my front teeth
I’ve played basketball since James Crawford was cool
Please don’t make me go back to being a Trolley Boy
How I help
Who I work with
Ben x Businesses
As a freelance copywriter, Perth businesses benefit from an outside perspective to help them along the brand voice journey. Just starting out? I’ll take the time to listen to your pain points, immerse in your brand and project, and find ways to improve your messaging. If you’re more advanced down the track, I can jump onto an existing project and sync with your desired voice and strategy. I’m especially interested in working with businesses who are struggling to build or maintain an identifiable brand identity, and bringing it to life with creative ideas and copywriting.
Ben x Freelancers
Look, technically it’s just me here, but also not really. Well, kind of. Sort of. I work in a shared studio in The Pickle District, a gritty little arts hub in a hidden pocket of West Perth. I have some great creative contacts, so I often collaborate with other experienced copywriters, art directors, and strategists. And they’re seriously good at what they do. I also know some great agencies and studios that can take on larger projects. Feel free to ask me for a referral if you need something and I’ll tee up an introduction.
Ben x Agencies
As a freelance copywriter, Perth and Sydney based agencies and studios often collaborate with me for larger projects and overflow jobs. I try to be as flexible and accommodating as possible, so you can pretty much plug me into whatever you’re working on. Teams, projects, one-offs, SOS calls when you need to get out of a deadline pickle.
WHAT MAKES ME A GOOD PERTH COPYWRITER?
I LIVE WHERE THEY LIVE
The North vs South rivalry. The overpriced pale ales. The smell of the river wafting across the Kwinana. This is where your customers live, and so do I. I was there when Mark closed our borders. I was there when the GF came to Burswood. I’ve seen jet ski sales rise and fall in line with the mining booms. There’s nowhere else like us (it’s a Perth thing).
I can HELP YOU GET TO THE CRUX
Come on, we haven’t got all day (even though we do). Perth people like a good conversation as much as the next person - but you need to get to the point. Like all good copywriters, I have a knack for absorbing large amounts of words, ideas and unfinished thought bubbles and distilling it all down to what really matters (and what your targets will care about most).
I WRITE ‘TIl its right
Perth people don’t give up easily. While I’d love to nail your copy first time every time, I understand how personal writing for your business or brand can be. What’s most important to me is that you’re happy with the job. And I’m good at taking on feedback. So if we don’t hit the mark, I’ll keep going until it’s right.
I VALUE CREATIVITY
Slowly but surely, Perth is finding itself and seeing the benefit of breaking convention. In the space of a couple of decades, we’ve gone from bronze kangaroo statues on St Georges Terrace to a giant green cactus in Forrest Chase. Why? Nobody knows, but it’s provocative! When applied to your business, that kind of left-field creative thinking can take you some great places.
I’M PRETTY NORMAL
I’m from the Perth hills. I have two rowdy kids. I watch the footy. I play basketball. I go camping. I build rock walls. I’m what they call an outgoing introvert, so I like having fun but can be pretty low key. I’ve had people say that makes me easy to work with. I’m the kind of copywriter that has your best interests at heart. I listen, let it all marinate, and come back with something thoughtful.
OBLIGATORY BACKSTORY
Still reading? Here’s a bit about how I came to be the freelance copywriter Perth loves (probably).
Early days
Was I born to write copy? Maybe. My destiny was stamped as a six-year-old when I won a Young Writers award for what my mum later outed as blatant plagiary of Little Golden Book’s 1982 classic, Panda Bear’s Secret.
I would go on to study advertising and writing at university as a mature-ager. Call it sheer dedication (or desperation), but by the time I was throwing up that mortarboard I’d averaged Distinctions across the board, had an essay published in the September 2012 Campaign Brief magazine, and had my bike stolen from outside the uni reception (I’ve moved on, really).
Honing skills
Next thing you know it’s 2013, and I’m writing alongside the talented head copywriter of Kinetic in Subiaco. I cut my teeth writing radio scripts, and was quickly fast-tracked into the ad world, working directly with clients and alongside advertising agencies.
During this time I was lucky to have worked with some incredible creative professionals, some of which I work with to this day. I gained invaluable copywriting exposure across the board, working on projects for household names like Nova 937, Belmont Forum, Watertown Brand Outlet, ABN Group, and RAC.
Into the wild
By 2016, the opportunity to freelance arose, and Rumbot was born. The best part about offering a freelance copywriting service (aside from working from home and not getting dressed until midday), is the exposure to different projects. Over the years I’ve been fortunate to have racked my brain on projects for businesses of all sizes, from SMEs in the Kimberley, to video production brands in Sydney.
I’ve penned TVC scripts for luxury homebuilders. Written taglines for apps. Named high end finance entities. Rolled out ad campaigns for shopping centres. Crafted season brochures for theatre companies. Even the nitty gritty copywriting jobs like SEO and tender documents. Every day is different. I look forward to finding out what you have in store.
Together we can make your brand go beast mode
Remember - before people buy what you offer, they need to buy into you.
Give your brand voice the TLC it deserves and be the confident, likeable, huggable brand they want you to be.
